Monte Generoso

Monte Generoso is the mountain which offers the finest panorama over the whole of Canton Ticino. It can be reached by a small cog-wheel railway which leaves from Capolago, on the shores of Lake Lugano, 274 yards above sea level and takes passengers up to Vetta, perched atop Monte Generoso at an altitude of 1704m. The 40-minute journey winds its way through an unspoilt natural setting. From Vetta there are magnificent sweeping views over the lake region, the Lombard plain to the Apennines and the Alpine range from the Eiger to the Matterhorn and from the Jungfrau to Monte Rosa. Monte Generoso also boasts a broad variety of natural treasures. Many rare species of animal an plant life that can no longer be found elsewhere are present on Generoso since the last glaciation.
